Our approach to sustainable products

At Ladybug Designs, we believe that great promotional products and responsible business practices go hand in hand. Your brand communicates your values with every item it puts into the world, and we are here to make sure that message includes a genuine commitment to sustainability.

Today’s employees, customers, and stakeholders notice when an organization backs its values with action. The promotional products you choose, and the way they are sourced, produced, and packaged, say something about who you are as an organization.

We work with suppliers across Canada and North America who share our standards for ethical production and environmental responsibility. Whether you are building an employee rewards program or executing a national brand campaign, we help you choose products that align with your organization’s sustainability goals without compromising on quality or impact.

Our approach is practical, not performative. We research materials, vet suppliers, and stay current on certifications so you do not have to. When an eco-friendly option meets our quality bar, we recommend it. When it does not, we are upfront about the trade-offs and help you make the best decision for your brand and your values.

Eco-friendly product categories

We curate products across eight sustainability-focused categories so you can find the right fit for your program or campaign.

Many items can be decorated with your branding using our full range of decoration methods, including embroidery, screen printing, and heat transfer. This means you do not have to choose between sustainability and brand visibility; you get both.

  • Biodegradable and compostable: Wheat straw and corn starch pens, seed paper notebooks, and other items designed to break down naturally at end of life.
  • Recycled materials: Products made from recycled plastic, glass awards crafted from reclaimed material, and towels woven from recycled fibres.
  • Reusable products: Cloth tote bags, stainless steel water bottles, and reusable cutlery sets that replace single-use alternatives.
  • Organic materials: Organic cotton apparel and natural fibre accessories, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
  • Bio-based: Bamboo pens, bamboo-blend clothing, bamboo journals, and sustainably harvested wood items.
  • Alternative energy: Solar-powered chargers, flashlights, and calculators that reduce battery waste.
  • Living products: Seed packets, tree seedlings, and plantable greeting cards that leave a lasting, growing impression.
  • Low-VOC: Markers, highlighters, and writing instruments manufactured with reduced volatile organic compounds.

We are always expanding our eco-friendly product selection. If you have a specific sustainability requirement that is not listed here, let us know and we will source options for you.

Not sure which category fits your project? Get in touch and we will help you build a product mix that meets your sustainability criteria.

Certifications that matter

Third-party certifications take the guesswork out of sustainability claims. We prioritize products backed by recognized standards so you can communicate your commitment with confidence and credibility.

Certification What it verifies
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Paper and wood products sourced from responsibly managed forests
Fair Trade Fair wages and safe working conditions throughout the supply chain
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Organic fibre content and environmentally responsible textile processing
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Textiles tested and verified free of harmful substances
Recycled content verified Independently confirmed percentage of post-consumer or post-industrial recycled material

When a certified option is available for your product selection, we flag it and explain what the certification means so your team can make an informed choice. We also keep certification documentation on file so you can reference it in your own sustainability communications and internal reporting.

Indigenous product sourcing

We can source products created by Indigenous artisans and businesses in Canada when your program calls for it. Categories may include arts, beadwork and jewelry, cultural items, handcrafted goods, and educational materials.

Availability varies, and we are transparent about what we can and cannot source at any given time. If your organization has Indigenous procurement goals, get in touch and we will let you know what is currently available.

Sustainable packaging

The sustainability of your order does not end with the product itself. We apply responsible packaging practices across every shipment because packaging is one of the most visible signals of your organization’s environmental values.

  • Recyclable materials preferred: We default to recyclable cardboard and paper-based packaging wherever possible.
  • Box reuse program: When we reuse shipping boxes, we include an explanatory card so your recipients understand that the choice is intentional and environmentally motivated.
  • Right-sized packaging: We match box dimensions to order size, reducing filler material and wasted space. This also lowers shipping weight and the carbon footprint of transportation.
  • Minimal plastic: We actively reduce plastic in our packaging, substituting paper-based alternatives for cushioning and void fill where product protection allows.
  • Vegetable-based inks: Printed packaging materials and inserts use vegetable-based inks with lower environmental impact.

For managed fulfillment clients, we apply these practices consistently across every order we ship on your behalf, so your sustainability standards are maintained whether you are sending one package or one thousand.

Ethical sourcing and supply chain accountability

Your brand reputation depends on every link in the supply chain. We take that responsibility seriously.

  • Fair labour standards: We work with suppliers who uphold fair wages, safe working conditions, and ethical employment practices.
  • Supply chain transparency: Responsible Manufacturing Information is available on request for any product in our catalogue. We provide factory details, labour practice documentation, and material origin data when you need it.
  • Regulatory compliance: Our sourcing practices comply with Canada's Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act, and we support your organization's due diligence requirements.
  • Supplier vetting: We evaluate our supply chain partners against ethical benchmarks and prioritize relationships with manufacturers who demonstrate continuous improvement in their labour and environmental practices.
  • Canadian-first sourcing: Whenever possible, we source from Canadian suppliers and manufacturers, reducing transportation distances and supporting the domestic economy.

We are straightforward about what we know and what we are still working to improve. Ethical sourcing is not a checkbox; it is an ongoing process. If a product does not meet your ethical sourcing threshold, we will tell you and help you find an alternative that does.
